That's a factory farm, as seen from above. 

Scary, huh? That green sea is a manure lagoon, housing all the animals' waste. Worldwide, over 80 billion land animals are used for food. Compared to 1950, today we raise 9400% more animals in the U.S. with 60% fewer farmers. More animals and fewer farmers? That's factory farming. That's similar to what's invaded Lisa's neighborhood, and so many others. And it's come with catastrophic consequences.

How we feed all those animals is destroying the planet.

The mathematics of mass meat production don't add up. To produce one pound of meat, an animal eats about 15 pounds of crops. Even the most efficient sources of meat convert only around 11% of gross feed energy into human food. That is: we funnel far more resources through animals than we get out. And to feed the beast that is factory farming, we constantly need to be growing more and more animal feed. That means converting more and more land to agricultural operations. It means more pesticide use.  It means burning and clear-cutting the Amazon and other rain forests. Today, 30% of Earth's landmass (and 70% of all farmland) goes to meat, dairy and egg production.

Vast quantities of water are used to grow all those crops, and for the animals to drink.

According to the Water Footprint Network, it takes over 2,000 gallons of water to produce a single steak and over 800 gallons to produce a single glass of milk. Nearly 600 gallons are used to produce just one pound of chicken meat, and nearly 400 gallons go into just one egg.

Factory farming is so resource-intensive, it's the #1 cause of climate change. 

Cutting down those forests, putting all those resources into grain production, feeding the grain to all those animals? As the United Nations reports, that system causes "an even larger contribution" to climate change "than the transportation sector worldwide." That’s right: farm animals contribute more to climate change than all the world’s cars, trucks, trains, planes and ships combined.

In the U.N.'s climate calculations, seafood is oddly excluded. 

And that's crazy. Because while, annually, 80 billion land animals are farmed, 2.7 trillion fish are taken from the oceans. They're yanked up in nets many miles long (which accidentally catch whales, dolphins, sea turtles and anything else in their way). Those nets are pulled by ships emitting huge amounts of climate-changing gases. And tens of billions more fish are farmed on aquatic factory farms.

Which is why she's cut way back on meat. That's good for the planet -- and also for Lisa. Studies galore show that the more meat we eat, the more we risk getting cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other health problems. “A diet higher in plant-based foods,” concludes the U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, “is more health promoting…than is the current U.S. diet.” All of the best available science on the leading causes of disease and death in the U.S. show that plant-based eating is the key to a healthier, longer life.

In short: Food is the problem. Food is the solution.

What we eat has major impacts on the type of world we live in, and the type of planet we live on. Plant-based foods use fewer resources than meat to produce, so they're gentler on the planet. Plus, they're better for our bodies: plant-based eating has been shown to prevent and reverse heart disease, treat diabetes without the use of insulin, prevent stroke, and help us live longer. 

Of course, we needn't all eat entirely meat-free to make a difference. Simply eating more of these foods will make a huge difference. So try Meatless Mondays. Try VB6 (eating vegan before 6pm). Try a 21-day plant-based challenge. Do what works for you.
